Family Style Lunchtimes

Lunchtimes are an important time within the school day, offering a unique opportunity to foster good social skills and a sense of belonging amongst children gathered together. Our year six children head the tables for the younger children, encouraging them to try foods, use cutlery correctly and demonstrate great manners. The younger children adore having the older children to look after them, and it helps our older children to appreciate the importance of responsibility and the rewards we feel when helping others who need us.

During this period, we encourage meaningful interactions through the use of conversation starters, riddles, and puzzles that spark discussion and debate. These activities also stimulate critical thinking and collaborative problem-solving. The children genuinely enjoy these activities, demonstrating eagerness to participate and share their thoughts or solutions. Sentence openers are provided in frames on the tables to help the children debate, add or challenge respectfully. Ultimately, we believe that such interactions during lunchtimes play a vital role in their oracy, social development and overall educational experience.

An example of lunchtime questions

Food

Our meals are prepared off site and delivered to our school kitchen in time to be served at lunchtime.

How much are school meals?

School lunches cost £3.15 a day. (January 2025)

All children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 are entitled to Universal Free School Meals.

School lunches need to be paid for in advance online via Parent Pay.

What will my child be eating?

All children can either choose to have a hot school dinner or a packed lunch.  We encourage parents to provide a healthy lunch box and do not allow sweets or fizzy drinks in their packed lunch.

Snacks

All infant children are provided with a fruit or vegetable snack at breaktime.  KS2 children are encouraged to bring a piece of fresh fruit as a breaktime snack.  No other snacks are allowed.

All children are encouraged to bring a refillable water bottle.  These should only contain water.  Juice is only allowed as part of a child's lunch.

School holiday arrangements

We are working with KCC to make sure that families who are eligible for benefits-related free school meals will receive vouchers to feed their children during school holidays. If eligible you will receive a £10 voucher per eligible child, which can be spent in supermarkets and local shops.

If your child gets free school meals because they are in Year 2 or below, you will still need to apply for benefits-related free school meals to get vouchers during the school holidays.
